About Richard Adams

While working as a civil servant in 1972, Richard Adams wrote his first novel, Watership Down. While the book gained notoriety and an avid readership in England upon its publication, it wasn’t until it attracted widespread recognition in the United States that Adams achieved true literary fame.

Much of Watership Down is set in the same forests and grasslands in which Adams spent his childhood, and the vivid depictions of the rabbits' natural habitat are drawn from his own personal experiences. A fantasy story by modern standards, the novel’s geographic accuracy and commentary on the often ruthless environment in which the Watership warren live, make it a unique tale of survival and natural order.

From Fiver and Hazel to Bigwig and Clover, Adams inspirits each of the warren rabbits with intelligence and compassion, capable of experiencing human-like emotions and undergoing numerous challenges in their quest for a place to call home.
